It costs nothing to get your hands on a 3V Vouchers card - but you will be charged a monthly maintenance fee of £1. Some prepaid cards command a £10 monthly fee - so this really is a paltry amount and great for money savers. What's more - there are no purchase transaction fees either.
So, let's recap - it costs nothing to take the card out, there's a very small monthly fee and no purchase transaction fee - so just where are these 3V guys making their money?
Well, the main spend on these cards looks to be the price it costs to actually buy the 3V vouchers. A £20 3V voucher will cost you nothing on top of the £20 of the voucher, but vouchers for £30 - £100 will cost you £2 and vouchers for £110 - £200 cost £3.50.
Still, in comparison with other Prepaid cards, the 3V Voucher card is coming in really low in the fees stakes. Good news for you.
Is it a voucher or a card?
Good question! It's got a bit of an identity crisis this one because it's actually both. You need the card to be able to get the vouchers. But it's the vouchers that you actually use when you're spending online, over the phone or by mail order. Each voucher has a different VISA code and once you've spent it, it becomes null and void.
When you buy a 3V voucher, the expiry date and CVV2 code for the voucher are delivered separately to either your mobile phone or email address - basically meaning any fraudsters out there are going to be put out of a job.
Any Downsides?
You can't withdraw cash from your 3V voucher card at ATM cash machines - so don't go trying. Their customer services team can be reached by emailing or phoning - but with two numbers at a national rate and a premium rate it's probably best to avoid calling and use email instead.
The maximum amount you can buy vouchers for is £200 - comparatively smaller than other Prepaid cards - with some going up to £5000.
If you're not good with keeping hold of fiddly bits of paper than this might not be the best option for you. Plus, if you've got a gambling habit then don't expect to be able to feed it with your 3V vouchers because it just won't wash! 3V Vouchers can't be used on gambling websites.
Final Word
A whole lot safer than a credit card and you don't need a bank account to get hold of one, the 3V Vouchers card is a pretty nifty new idea.
If you're good with pieces of paper and aren't likely to lose them, then shopping online with these could set your mind at ease. Even if you have a bank account, a 3V Voucher card isn't linked to it - so your identity will definitely remain your own when shopping online. Fraudsters can basically forget about it!
