With all the media-hype and eco-talk of how important it is to go green now - for the sake of your children and future generations to come - on top of the imminent danger of global warming - it can be a hard fight to resist the go-green movement.
However, going green isn't exactly as easy as it really ought to be. In a time of busy lives, car necessity, and the annoyance of separating all your rubbish into plastic bags that inevitably get left by the bin man to float aimlessly down your street - going green can in fact become a rather expensive pain in the backside.
Thankfully the larger corporations have begun to help ease the burden of being bullied into life changing greenness and started offering a range of products and services to help reduce the cost and tedium of becoming a little more environmentally friendly.
Among the bandwagon jumpers is Barclaycard - with their offering of an eco-friendly credit card - the Barclaycard Breathe credit card.
The offering of the rather aptly named Barclaycard Breathe credit card, which aims to offset carbon emissions, is quite a pleasant and easy introduction into - or addition of - environmental friendliness for absolute beginners and hardcore enthusiasts alike.
The deal
Go green the easy way with an environmentally friendly made credit card that offers savings on green products and services - as well as generating donations for government approved carbon offset projects.
What do I get?
A range of discounts and money saving offers on green products and services, cheaper interest rates for public transport spending, alongside the conscious easing knowledge of helping to donate money to carbon offsetting projects in the UK and around the world.
As a Barclaycard credit card, you'll also get to enjoy all the added services and extras of a Barclaycard. Including purchase delivery protection, fraud protection, travel insurance and savings, assistance abroad, and select shopping discounts.
How do I use it?
Green product and service savings can be accessed via the dedicated Barclaycard Breathe website – savings include money off British Gas home insulation, Ecotricity, Halfords cycles, Hertz green car hire, ecoelectricals.co.uk, So Organic, Natual Collection ethical shopping – and all the things you need to 'go green'.
Using the Barclaycard Breathe credit card to pay for public transport spend will get you a very reduced interest rate on the balance – however this does exclude Transport for London service purchases.
Donations made to Pure – the Clean Planet Trust, a charity set up to work on carbon offsetting projects, are actually given as a percentage of the profits made by the Barclaycard Breathe credit card.
Unlike other charity credit cards where a percentage of your total spend is donated, Barclaycard will be donating 50% of the net profits (after tax) generated by the Barclaycard Breathe credit card - with a stated minimum donation of £1 million in the first year.
Anything to be aware of?
Not especially.
The 0% balance transfer period is for a decent period of 12 months, however there is no combined 0% purchase deal and payments to your account will go towards repaying any promotional balance transfer first.
Also, reduced rate public transport spend balances will also be repaid before other standard rate purchases and any cash transactions.
The cash transaction rate is a little high, so try and keep your ATM withdrawals, foreign currency purchase, etc..., on your debit card.
