Review Continued...

The Barclaycard flexi-rate credit card is a great card for anyone who doesn't always manage to repay their balance in full. Added to a really competitive interest rate (depending on how much you choose to repay each month), you'll also get all the cardholder benefits of a world-renowned 'Barclaycard'.

New customers can also look forward to benefiting from 0% rates on transferred balances for 14 months - up to £5,000 (2.9% transfer fee) - and 0% on purchases for 3 months, allowing you to really get back on top of any existing credit card debts or enjoy a brief spell at 0% for any luxury purchases you've been looking at.

Flexi-rate

If you're after a credit card that won't charge you ridiculous amounts of interest when you carry a balance over from month-to-month, the Barclaycard flexi-rate credit card offers a very tempting proposition.

When you repay 10%, or more, of your monthly balance you'll receive an interest rate on your purchase balance of just 9.9% p.a.

Repay less than 10% and you'll still get a competitive rate. Repaying just 5% of your balance will get you a 12.9% p.a. interest rate on your purchases, and repaying only the minimum monthly payment (2.25% of your balance) will get you an interest rate of 14.9% p.a. on your purchases.

This 'flexi-rate' does only apply to balances resulting from purchases. So remember to keep any cash withdrawals, foreign currency purchase, on your debit card.

0% Balance Transfers

The Barclaycard Flexi-Rate credit card offers 0% balance transfers for 14 months, which is plenty of time to get your credit card finances back under control.

It's important to remember that this offer is limited to a transfer of up to £5,000, or 90% of your credit limit, whichever is lower. Amounts in excess of the £5,000 limit, if they are honored, will still receive a low interest rate until paid off in full.

Balance transfers also carry a handling fee, which will be 2.9% of the amount you are transferring. Though, it's important to bear in mind this will be small change in comparison to the money you'll save from getting 0% interest charges for this length of time.

0% Purchases

The Barclaycard Flexi-Rate credit card also comes with 0% on purchases for 3 months. While this is by no means as long as some market leading 0% purchase up to 15-month deals, it's not to be snubbed if you're taking out this card for the standard low interest on flexible repayments.

It is important to note that due to the 0% purchase deal expiring 11 months prior to the end of the 0% balance transfer deal - any new purchases added to an account holding a 0% balance transfer will become 'trapped' behind the balance transfer debt and start accruing interest after the initial 3-months.

This happens because of the Allocation of Payments Clause in all credit card terms and conditions. It's a very usual fine, and the best course of action is simply to only use the card for a balance transfer and wait until it's repaid in full before using it at the checkout or ATM.

Also don't forget, if you just use the card for purchases - any cash transactions will still be charged interest as they are not included in the 0% purchase deal. The same 'Allocation of Payments' clause will mean any payments will go towards 0% purchases - or even standard purchases, before knocking the balance off any ATM withdrawals or foreign currency purchase. Our advice; only get cash from your debit card.
