About Bread prepaid card...

- Join now and get £5 free cash back
- No bank account needed
- Only spend what you can afford

The people at Bread, reckon, that their card is the best thing since sliced (erm) bread. Clever! But, seeing as sliced bread has been around since Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented a machine to slice and wrap it in 1928, are Bread’s claims just a little too over-the-top?

The card costs £10 to get hold of - but you will get £5 free cash back when you sign up. While you won’t need a bank account to obtain this card you will need proof of ID - in the form of a passport or driving licence - and a UK address and the card will be winging its way to you.

Just like a pay-as-you-go mobile phone, you can top up as you go. Top up options include via SMS text message, or more conventionally by BACS transfer (25p cost), credit or debit card, or at PayPoint machines (3% fee).

More about Bread prepaid card...

Protected by Chip & PIN technology, prepaid cards are safer than carrying wads of cash around. So, while someone may be able to nick the actual card they're not going to be able to get hold of the money you loaded on to it. If the worst does happen, it's also easy to get things sorted with Bread's local rate, Lost and Stolen helpline, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Bread prepaid card costs a flat £10 (or £5 with the £5 free cash back incentive that they're running at the moment).

Whilst Bread doesn't charge a monthly maintenance fee they do charge purchase transaction fees of 2%. To withdraw money from your Bread card at an ATM will also cost you £1.50 (but this is pretty standard fare when it comes to Prepaid cards).

You can top up your Bread card to a maximum of £3500 - with a maximum daily load of £500 (nice if you've got it).

Bread is a Maestro card - so just like a Maestro debit card, you can use it wherever the Maestro sign is on show - that's all over the world (though a 2.75% foreign fee will apply for non-sterling transactions).

Lost/Stolen cards cost £10 to replace (a standard figure with Prepaid cards).

How to manage your card

You can apply for a Bread Prepaid card online and once you're signed up you can also check your usage and your card balance online. A customer service helpline is available but be warned, it's a 0905 number and costs a whopping 80p per minute - so call at your peril.

Is it right for me?

If you're after a 'back-up' card, then with no monthly fee, the Bread Prepaid card is a good option. But, if you're seriously planning for it to take the place of hard cash, then, with the 2% purchase fee on every item you buy on it, it's probably not the one for you.

Another thing - if you're a bit of a worrier and often have to ring up customer service help lines, don't plump for the Bread prepaid card because it'll cost you a fortune alone in phone bills.

Final Word

The Bread prepaid card offers a good incentive of £5 free cash back - so theoretically it's only costing you £5 to buy. That's pretty cheap when it comes to prepaid cards.

The main downfall with this card is the extortionate amount of money it will cost you to call customer services: 80p a minute. If you think you’ll be able to steer clear of dialling this number then the Bread Prepaid card is definitely worth considering.

Whether it's as good as sliced bread remains to be seen. The quality of sliced bread varies - as does the quality of Prepaid cards. The Bread Prepaid card is, we would say, equivalent to a 72p loaf.
