A great way to control your spending, prepaid cards only allow you to spend the money you have on the card. So if you're desperate for that new pair of jeans - you'll only be able to have them if you have the cash... there's no going overdrawn with this card (which is a welcome change!).
The CashPlus Prepaid Gold MasterCard can be topped up free at over 14,500 UK locations - including any UK Post Office. With one of these cards in your wallet you'll be able to shop securely online, in store or by phone - and if there happen to be any problems, the team at CashPlus will be there to help sort it out. In fact, they'll be there 24/7!
Their 24 hours a day, seven days a week telephone service (at national rate) enables you to get in touch if anything should go wrong at any time - there's no waiting for offices to open and working weeks to start. So, you can activate your card, report it lost or stolen, check your balance and check your last transactions at any time of the day or night. That's quite a service.
The CashPlus team also offer a texting service - which lets you have your balance and last five transactions texted to you at a cost of 25p plus your normal text rate - handy if you're not near a computer.
You'll also be able to access and manage your CashPlus Prepaid card online - with a secure members' area where you can check your balance, print off statements and review past transactions. With this, and the telephone service you can access your card details anytime - excellent for monitoring spending.
How much will it all set me back?
The CashPlus prepaid card has a one-off card purchase fee of £9.95 and a monthly maintenance fee of £4.95. You won't, however, be charged for any purchases you make with your card - which when compared to other Prepaid cards that don’t charge a monthly maintenance fee but do charge purchase fees - could work out to be considerably lower.
Cash withdrawals at ATMs will set you back £2.00 a time - so to keep these charges down, make sure you have a little spare cash on you for smaller items.
If you lose your card or it gets stolen there is a replacement fee of £9.95. If, after having opted for the CashPlus Prepaid card, you decide it isn't for you, you'll be charged £10 for canceling and redeeming any balance on your card - so make sure this is the card for you.
Are there any limitations?
Whilst the CashPlus Prepaid MasterCard card offers you greater freedom from carrying large wads of cash around, there is a limit as to how much you can top it up with. The maximum amount you can have on this card at any one time is £5,000. And if you're considering topping it up with this much cash, you might want to consider doing it by BACs transfer - which is free. Traipsing to the Post Office with £5,000 in your back pocket(s) probably isn't the best idea!
Does it work abroad?
Yes it does! You can get hold of your money at any MasterCard ATM or pay for your goods in shops where the MasterCard symbol is displayed. There's a standard fee of 2.75% for using your card abroad.
The Final Word
Choosing which prepaid card you want is a bit of a balancing act. Some, like the CashPlus Prepaid Gold MasterCard card charge monthly maintenance fees while others charge purchase fees.
You need to consider what you want the card for - whether you'll be doing a lot of spending on it, or whether it's just for emergencies. The CashPlus Prepaid card is best for you if you plan to use it a lot - as the monthly maintenance fee will be considerably lower than constant purchase fees on other cards.
