More about Citi bmibaby credit card...
bmibaby flight rewards
The best feature of the bmibaby credit card is the free flight rewards.
If you spend more than £100 on the card in the first 90 days, you'll qualify for a free return flight anywhere on the bmibaby network. There are a few restrictions on availability, but this seems to be a pretty straightforward offer and one not to miss out on if you do take this card out.
In addition, simply spend more than £3,000 each year on the bmibaby credit card, and you'll qualify, each year, for another free return flight.
0% balance transfers
There is a 12-month 0% balance transfer deal on the Citi bmibaby credit card with a standard 3% transfer fee.
The problems with this offer is it really seems to be a knocked-on extra that doesn't form part of the main reasons for opting for the bmibaby credit card over any other.
It's not a bad deal - though it's not the most competitive. However, as there is no combined 0% purchase deal, any spending on the card (which you'd need to do to get the free flights) would become trapped behind any 0% balance transfer amount, and you'd have to pay back the balance transfer before any purchase spend.
Due to this fact that you shouldn't spend whilst also using this card for a balance transfer - if you do want to transfer a balance, get another 0% balance transfer credit card and keep just your spending on the bmibaby credit card.
All the Citi cardholder extras
It's nice to see here that Citi have included all of their rather amazing cardholder extras on the bmibaby credit card.
You'll get access to Citi's Identity Theft Solutions, which means that you'll get a dedicated team helping you to sort things out if your identity ever gets stolen.
Only a few credit cards offer this at present, and if it is something that you are worried about, then it's a really useful add-on. Citi will also monitor your card for suspicious transactions and will contact you if they see anything out of the ordinary.
Amongst the fraud protection, you'll also get to benefit from a price match guarantee, which, subject to limits, means that if you buy something on the bmibaby credit card and then find it cheaper elsewhere within 60 days, Citi will refund you the difference - which is pretty nice of them!
Purchases will also benefit from a purchase protection insurance - very useful cover most often found on prestige credit cards that will offer some peace of mind in case anything nice and expensive you've bought gets stolen, damaged or set on fire within 30 days. Noticeably, cover will extend to purchases bought anywhere in the world.
It's also worth mentioning the extended warranty service available that offers a second year warranty on most well-known brand name domestic electrical appliances bought in the UK. The product will need to have it's own manufacturer's warranty, but you'll then get cover for the same risks for another 12 months.
Good for...
The Citi bmibaby credit card is a really good card if you want feel as though you're earning something really special from your spending, rather than just a few reward points to use in a company catalogue.
With a typical APR of 16.9%, this is not one of the cheapest cards on the market, but if you clear your balance in full each month and spend at least £250 per month, then you've got a free return flight to look forward every year.
Becoming a Citi credit card holder is also a good way of keeping any large purchases out of trouble until they've safely been unpacked at home. Similarly, any one looking for a little extra peace of mind when typing in card details online will get relief from the vast range of Citi fraud services.
Not so good for...
If you don't repay your balance in full each month, whilst you may get a free flight each year, you'll probably end up paying for it through interest charges.
It may pay you more to consider a lower APR card and use the money you save in charges for your flight.
If you're going to get the best from the Citi bmibaby credit card, then you need to be spending at least £3,000 on it each year to get the free flights. If you don't think you can spend this much on plastic - though it really wouldn't be hard to do - you might be better off with a high-rate cash back credit card that'll reward you even if you only manage to buy a newspaper and a kitkat.
Similarly, if you're a very high on-plastic spender, bmibaby's parent company BMI also has a branded credit card. This is provided by MBNA rather than Citi and offers a different reward structure, rewarding more spending with 'destination miles', which may be better for bigger spenders.
Summary
The Citi bmibaby credit card is the perfect wallet companion for travel seekers who don't want to have to run up a massive bill on credit or wait 3 years to earn enough miles for a free flight.
With a host of Citi cardholder extras on offer the Citi bmibaby credit card also really makes for the perfect plastic for any large purchases, especially domestic appliances which will qualify for a free extended warranty.
