A. The actual amount of air miles you're likely to earn on an air miles credit card is determined first by the air mile credit card you choose and secondly by your own spending made with the credit card.

Frequent flyer mile programs are operated by most of the major airlines across the world including British Airway and Virgin Atlantic, as well as some of the more modest airlines such as bmi.

Many frequent flyer mile programs actually cross over with many other programs. This is because most airlines are part of a group of airline partners and on one airline’s flyer mile program you can often earn and spend miles with all the partner airlines too.

For example, if you sign up to the British Airways flyer mile program you’ll be able to earn and spend miles with any of the group of oneworld airlines - Qantas, American Airlines, Iberia, Japan Airlines, etc and vice versa.

There are also frequent flyer mile programs that are run somewhat independently of a particular airline and allow you to spend miles with a number of partnered airlines, for example AirMiles.

AirMiles is a very good flyer mile program if you are more of an occasional flyer due to the ability to earn additional AirMiles at Tesco, Shell and a number of other retailers.

Airline specific programs are more useful to business or very regular flyers as you can earn your way up the membership levels and gain access to exclusive airline services such as priority check-in services, extra baggage allowance and VIP airport lounge access.

Making the most of frequent flyer programs
If you love to travel then one of the best rewards you can enjoy from your credit card is the ability to earn air miles. You can earn these air miles in a number of ways. You can earn air miles by making purchases on your air miles credit card, and you can even enjoy bonus air miles from places such as travel companies, hotels, your operators, and of course the airlines themselves.

If you travel a lot you will normally not need to join a frequent flyer program as such, as this will come with the card. However, in some cases, such as with Virgin Atlantic, you will need to register for the program first, as you will need certain details from your membership to apply for the Virgin card.

Frequent flyer programs are available from many major airlines, and are an effective way of accruing air miles towards future travel, enabling you to make the most of your air miles credit card. Since these programs were launched at the start of the 1980s, they have become increasingly popular, with a wide range of airlines now offering these programs.

You do need to remember that the terms and conditions associated with these frequent flyer programs can vary, and some airlines may offer mileage credits only on certain routes or fares. This is something that you need to check with the airline, so you should contact them and find out about any restrictions that are in place in order to make sure you get the most from these programs.
