The actual amount of air miles you're likely to earn on an air miles credit card is determined first by the air mile credit card you choose and secondly by your own spending made with the credit card.

Air mile credit cards offer an amount of air miles for each £1 spent on the card in purchases. The amount offered does vary and because there are often ways to increase air mile earnings when you spend with named travel companies or retailers it’s important to choose an air mile credit card that suits you.

Earning your air miles
Air mile credit cards are reward based credit cards that offer you the chance to earn points or miles towards airline flights and travel.

The number of miles that you receive will depend on the card issuer, as the air miles offered per pound spent can vary.

Also, of course, the amount that you spend on your card will affect the number of air miles that you earn.

Many air miles credit cards offer a bonus when you open your account - for instance you could net yourself 500 or 1000 air miles with some card issuers when you open your account. Air mile credit cards such as the British Airways credit card, British Airways Premium Plus credit card and the Virgin Atlantic credit card all offer bonus miles for taking out the card.

You will then earn air miles based on your spending. Some lenders offer one mile per pound spent on purchases, others offer 1.5, and some offer more than this.

It is important to compare air miles credit cards as this will help to ensure that you get a credit card that offers maximum rewards.

Some air mile credit cards also offer additional miles when you make purchases at particular places or when you purchase travel-based services.
