Football credit cards not only let you show off the vast amount of support you have for your chosen football club, but they also offer rewards for you and donations for your club too!

Obviously, comparing and choosing a football credit card is a fairly straightforward procedure - you find your team's card and hit the 'apply now' button!

However, as a financial product, we felt obliged to make sure you were still in understanding of the ins and outs of football credit cards.

So before you run to get your bank and employer's details... read on to find out a little bit more about football credit cards, and when you're ready you can compare football credit cards and find your team's card.

These cards are best for...

- Football lovers
Football credit cards are branded with your football team's colours so they are perfect for showing off your club loyalty.

But, not only will a football credit card look good in your wallet, they will also earn donations for your team and rewards for you!

Most football credit cards will earn your team a monetary contribution every time you spend on the card. These contributions are paid by the issuing bank or building society - so it won't cost you a penny.

The revenue generated by a football club's credit card will go towards supporting the future of football, helping to fund football academies and up-coming players.

The rewards you will earn by using a football credit card include points and / or prize draw entries depending on your chosen football team. Reward points are earned each time you spend on the card, with most cards awarding your spending with 1 reward point for each £1 spent.

Football credit card reward points can be redeemed for a range of rewards, including travel, shopping, entertainment and even football merchandise.

- Have a balance to transfer?
Many football credit cards come value-packed with interest-free offers, including 0% on balance transfers as well as 0% purchase deals too.

If you have a balance outstanding on a current credit card you could always transfer it to your new football credit card and benefit from a 0% interest rate for up to one whole year!

If you are going to transfer a balance to a football credit card, there is just one piece of cautionary advice...

The 0% balance transfer deals available are rarely coupled with equal length 0% purchase deals - so it's best to avoid spending on the card until you've first repaid your balance transfer or when the introductory period ends - whichever comes first.

This is namely because any new purchases will remain on your account - accruing interest charges - because payments will always go towards clearing your balance transfer first.

These cards are not suitable for...

- Regular balance carriers
Although not a strict football credit card no-no - it should be pointed out that if you do tend to carry a balance over from month to month, you may be better suited to a low interest rate credit card instead.

They won't look quite so good in your wallet but they will be kinder to your pocket; with lower rates of interest on balances left on your account each month.

You could even use the money you save in interest charges to buy one more match ticket!

- A poor credit history
If you've had a past history of poor credit use you may subsequently have a poor credit rating.

To prevent further damage to your credit rating, it may be wiser to choose a credit card designed to help people improve and strengthen their credit score.

Knowing what's on offer...

Comparing football credit cards will probably not be the hardest task you've ever undertaken - you simply find your football team's card and click through to the application page.

However, as a financial product it's still important to fully know what is on offer so you can make the most out of your football credit card and keep your pocket - as well as your wallet - happy.

- Football contributions
Many football credit cards offer your football team a little more than some free advertising space in your wallet. The issuing bank or building society will contribute money to the football club whenever you use the card to pay for purchases.

Contributions will be made to the football club every time you use the football credit card to pay for purchases, which is buying goods and services from retailers or companies.

Contributions won't be paid on balance transfers or cash transactions. Cash transactions include withdrawing cash from an ATM machine, getting 'cash back' at the supermarket, buying foreign currency or traveller's cheques and gambling transactions.

The contributions your football team receives from their football credit cards will often go towards the future of the club, helping to fund youth development projects and academies.

- Rewards for you
Many football credit cards offer reward schemes, which allow you to earn reward points on all your purchases. The reward points you earn can be with a generic rewards program, which means you can redeem your points for a variety of rewards from travel and entertainment to shopping and even cash.

Depending upon your football team, their football credit card may also offer exclusive rewards and discounts, including their football club's merchandise and tickets.

- The credit card stuff...
Football credit cards are like any other credit card, so it's important you are aware of the interest rate being charged when you carry a balance over from month-to-month and that you remember to always make the monthly payments.

When choosing a football credit card you'll obviously want to pick your favourite team's card, however it is also important to look at the typical APR quoted for the card.

The typical APR is the 'annual percentage rate', which is meant to allow you to better compare financial products. It includes the standard interest rate on purchases and also any applicable annual fee.

- 0% promotional offers
Some football credit cards offer very pleasing 0% promotional offers if you are looking to transfer and clear up any existing credit card balances.

If you are looking to transfer a balance to a 0% balance transfer deal on a football credit card, you should try and repay your balance transfer before you start using the football credit card for purchases, sometimes even if the football credit card also offers 0% on purchases.

It sounds a bit crazy, but unless the 0% purchase deal runs for the same period as the 0% balance transfer deal, any purchases you make with the football credit card will be subject to interest rates at the end of the 0% purchase period, and you may find you are unable to repay your purchases until you have first repaid your 0% balance transfer in full.

You shouldn't feel put off by transferring a balance to a football credit card, but try not to use it for purchases until you have repaid your balance transfer or the introductory period has ended, so you can fully benefit from the 0% balance transfer period and save yourself a little money.
