1. 8. 2008: Are credit card rewards too difficult to redeem?
Recent research and cross-population surveys have revealed that only 37.5% of people in the UK who use a reward credit card are actually redeeming their points for free goodies.

10 Ways to Compare Credit Cards That You Never Thought of Before
Introductory rates, APRs, cash back, reward schemes - all these things are important to look for when comparing credit cards, but what might you overlooked?

AFTER months of high prices, UK supermarkets have announced that they are cutting the price of fuel.

Asda have said that they're cutting the price of petrol and diesel by 3 pence per litre and Tesco have declared that they will reduce prices by up to 4 pence per litre. BP has also reduced petrol and diesel by 2 pence per litre on average and Morrisons are offering the best deal, with a guaranteed 4 pence per litre off petrol and diesel.

However, with the right credit card, you can cut fuel prices even further - many cuts have yet to be rolled out, and you can make sure that your fuel prices stay low with the right credit card, should the supermarkets edge up the prices in the coming months.

Petrol rebate reward credit cards

There are two credit cards that offer discounts or rebates on fuel - offered by Shell and Asda, and if you buy fuel from either of these places on a regular basis, these credit cards might be the ideal solution.

Asda offers 2 pence per litre off fuel with the Asda credit card, and whenever you use the Asda credit card - either at the forecourt or in store, you can earn points as well, which transfer into money-off vouchers sent to you just in time for Christmas.

Shell offers a 3% rebate on Shell fuel with their Citi Shell credit card, plus a 1% rebate on any other purchases made - both in the UK and abroad. If you have 9 years no claims, you'll be offered up to 70% discount on car insurance with Citi, and free motor legal cover.

Who can benefit from these petrol rebate credit cards?

The Asda and Citi Shell credit cards offer an appealing deal in a world where fuel prices seem to be sky-high, and many people could benefit from the rebates offered.

However, the credit cards are not for everyone - it's important to remember that you can only benefit from the rebates when you use a Shell/Asda forecourt to fill up, so unless the petrol stations are nearby, the discounts may not be worth it.

Secondly, it's important to work out the savings - use a site like www.petrolprices.com to work out which is the best petrol station in your area, and if you live near an Asda and a Shell forecourt, use these simple calculations to see who you could save more with:

Shell: Shell's price per litre - (3% / 100) x Shell's price per litire = cost per litre after savings.

Asda: (the simpler equation!) Asda’s price per litre - 2 pence = cost per litre after savings.

Below is a table for example only, based on average unleaded petrol prices quoted by WhatPrice.co.uk

Avr. cost per litre Reward Avr. saving per litre Avr. cost per litre after reward Avr. cost of 60 ltrs before Avr. cost of 60 ltrs after
Shell credit card 118.07p 3% rebate 3.54p 114.53p £70.84 £68.72
ASDA credit card 116.59p 2p off per litre 2p 114.59p £69.95 £68.75

Which petrol rebate credit card do you choose?

Essentially, both Asda and Shell are offering great discounts on fuel, and both credit cards are very appealing. What may swing it for you in the long run may be the extra incentives offered.

Asda's extra incentives are predominately for those who shop at Asda supermarkets - offering free home delivery when you spend over £99 on groceries, a 5% discount at Asda Living stores and the points which can be redeemed for money off vouchers.

The Citi Shell credit card is based around motoring deals - the free travel legal cover, up to 70% off Citi motor insurance, 30% off RAC membership for life and a free travel accident insurance policy.

If you drive more than you shop, the Citi credit card may just pip the Asda credit card to the post, but see which credit card can save you the most money.
