About Post Office Travel Money card...
- No purchase fees
- Can be used all over the world
- No more Traveller’s Cheques!
The Post Office have got on the prepaid card bandwagon and, just like all the other companies offering these cards, they're hailing it as the new way to spend. But does it really live up to the hype?
The Post Office Travel Money card (not exactly a roll-of-the-tongue name!) costs £10. Unlike other prepaid cards there are no monthly fees and no purchase fees - so far, so good!
You can load it up with funds from £50 - £2500 and do so on the phone or in a Post Office. There are plenty of other cards out there that only have a minimum load of £10 and a staggering maximum load of £5000 - but they'll probably be charging you monthly maintenance fees or at least purchase fees.
The Post Office Travel Money card comes in 3 varieties, you can choose a Euro, Dollar or Sterling based card - and depending on the card you choose, there will be no foreign purchase fees for transactions made in that currency.

More about Post Office Travel Money card...
The Post Office Travel Money card is being pushed by the Post Office as a great alternative to Traveller's Cheques. But is this substantiated?
When making purchases with Traveller's Cheques you need ID. With a Post Office Travel Money card you don't. One-nil to the Post Office! It's also safer and easier to carry a single piece of plastic around with you as opposed to countless Traveller's Cheques.
Plus, if we're going to bring 'coolness' into the equation, fumbling around for Traveller's Cheques in one of those flesh-coloured money bags that you wear under your t-shirt, is definitely not cool.
The Post Office Travel Money Card is a lot cooler, a lot less obvious than a stash of Traveller's Cheques and with its 24/7 helpline offers peace of mind too.
The Post Office Travel Money card has no ties with your bank account - a great way of making sure your identity remains your own if your prepaid card is stolen. If it is stolen or lost they'll be a £5 replacement fee (which, again, is a reasonable fee in comparison to other card companies).
One downfall about the Post Office Travel Money card is the lack of online facilities. Other prepaid cards offer online access where you can check your card balance, last transactions and load up the card with funds. The Post Office Travel Money card does not offer this - but perhaps this is why its fees (ATM, monthly maintenance, purchase fees) are comparatively low or even non-existent.
To withdraw money from your Post Office Travel Money card at an ATM you'll be charged £1.50 a time. Which, whilst this will add up if you consistently withdraw money, is actually one of the cheapest fees around on prepaid cards. Many prepaid card companies charge £2 or £2.50, and the Virgin prepaid card charges a 2.95% fee.
Final Word
If you're after an easy life when you're on holiday or traveling abroad, the Post Office Travel Money card is a great alternative to carrying cash or traveller's cheques.
Just remember to choose your currency choice wisely to keep any usage costs down, choose Euro for European traveling, Dollars for America, and Sterling if you intend to use the card in the UK.
With no purchase fees and no monthly maintenance costs, the Post Office Travel Money card, compared to other prepaid cards, wins hands down when it comes to cutting costs on fees, especially when abroad!
